   This is one of Torre Abbey’s great mysteries. On the reverse a handwritten note reads: ‘James Abbott McNeil Whistler – portrait of Charlotte Corday. Taken from a sketch, from life in the Bastille, by an official, by permission from the government’. No trace has been found of a portrait of Corday by this artist.
