   Deep Sea Black Coral

   Japan

   This object was once venerated as the physical embodiment of the deity enshrined in a Shinto sanctuary. The identity of the god himself is unknown. This object was never viewed by the worshippers, and represents a species of coral that thrives in especially deep water.
